President's Old Message

It is my great honor to be elected President of the World Crafts Council-Asia Pacific Region for the new term 2013-2016.

Traditional handicrafts are invaluable national treasures, that have to be nurtured and supported by all of us for the vital role they play in the general cultural scene of any community or nation, whether small or large, rich or poor. Craftspeople, producers of crafts products, are the backbone and main pillar in the World Crafts Council edifice. Each and everyone of us must strongly believe, deep within, that craftspeople comprise the sector that is most credited for keeping alive an important component of a society’s heritage and, consequently, its national identity. Besides keeping traditional crafts alive, craftspeople, as well, protect them from being distorted or defaced by the surge of the external cultural wave that could sweep them out, in the name of globalization. As much as it is necessary and inevitable to have an inter-cultural dialogue to exchange knowledge and expertise, and to cope up with the modern trends, it is also as important to be aware of the necessity of preserving the distinctive characteristics and identity of traditional handicrafts.

Being exposed to a different world other than that of academia, I have gained through my 17 years of membership in WCC-APR invaluable experience, wider scope of knowledge and depth in human relations. I proudly admit that the self-satisfaction which I attain from organizing handicrafts events, attending functions in other member countries, or helping to fulfill the slightest aspiration of craftspeople, keeps me full of energy, hope and love for a “Life with Purpose”.

Although I realize that the Presidency would be a great challenge and that I need to fulfill its requirements, I happily embrace the task with its responsibility, regardless of all impediments or obstacles, to accomplish such a noble altruistic mission. This will be possible with the commitment and cooperation of the Executive Board, all members and the support of public and private sectors, as well as international bodies.

Our primary role in this global, all embracing, Organization is to be fully dedicated to its noble mission of promoting craftspeople and crafts. This implies that, as President, I am faced with a sort of a bi-furcated mission that branches into: Regional and Inter-Regional levels.

The first step taken in fulfilling the Regional Mission was the big gathering in the Asia Pacific Region Handicrafts Week sponsored and held in the State of Kuwait during January 2013, in collaboration with the National Council for Culture, Arts & Letters (NCCAL) as part of the annual Qrain Festival. Hopefully, similar events will follow suite in other APR member countries.

As for the Inter-Regional Mission, the initial move of APR Presidency has been launched with Africa Region, which has been recently activated and re-organized through the commendable efforts of WCC-Immediate Past President, Mrs. Usha Krishna. Just like in the earlier APR Regional event, it has been possible to launch this Inter-Regional event in 10-15 Nov. 2013 under the sponsorship of the Kuwaiti government, as part of the celebrations of the Third African-Arab Summit.

It is my pride to have the initial two events, Regional and Inter-Regional, in my term of Presidency, in Kuwait, sponsored and hosted by the State of Kuwait, the current seat of WCC-APR Presidency (2013-2016).

In respect of the first mission, i.e. the Regional, emphasis will focus on APR Region. Accordingly, I shall be immersing myself in the issues and activities of the member countries all over the Region. The APR Executive Board, the Secretariat, the other APR Members and myself will join efforts to find all possible ways and means to have craftspeople, artisans, designers and experts in member countries get together on a common ground to deal with crafts issues, communicate and build friendly relations with each other, in order to move forward, hand-in-hand, to serve the cause of the organization in developing handicrafts and ensuring the well-being of the craftspeople.

Though WCC body is geographically fragmented into 5 Regions, yet the efforts of the Regional Presidents to build bridges of cooperation among themselves ought to be able to connect them culturally and economically. Moreover, cooperating and working together with the WCC Presidency in China will unite all the Regions in one whole entity. In its attempt to stretch its arms a little further, APR has on its agenda a tentative Inter-Regional event with another WCC-Region, namely South (Latin) America.

APR Action Plan (2013-2016)

Flagship Projects:

APR has already two main long-term projects on its agenda, namely: Crafts Education (CE) and Natural Dyes (ND). Both were launched in 2008 and were presided respectively, by Ms.Surapee Rojanavongse (Immediate Past President of APR) and Ms.Sayyada Ruby Ghuznavi (Past Senior Vice President of APR). Out of my belief in continuity, it is our responsibility to deal with these two projects and to initiate together vital new ones during the current term of Presidency.

Moreover, in cooperation with APR Board and all other members, I shall hopefully be able to realize during my term of Presidency an ambitious academic project, which I have been long thinking of. This is the publication of an “Encyclopedia of Handicrafts in Asia-Pacific Region”. The framework and details of this project will be presented to the Executive Board in the 3rd Board Meeting, to take place in June 1-3rd, 2014, in Muscat in the Sultanate of Oman.

Membership:

Communications with inactive old members will hopefully be retrieved by preparing a survey that might highlight the causes of this issue. Simultaneously, we should work on attracting new recruitment of young people, students in particular, to inject WCC with new blood of budding-blooming youth to keep the organization active and alive for a better future. Moreover, membership had been already opened for those who encourage, appreciate and promote crafts , like corporations and private businesses. A certificate of Membership will be granted to members who pay the full four-year term membership fee as a gesture of acknowledgement for their care and commitment to WCC-APR.

Awards :

To encourage craftspeople to be innovative, creative and productive of high quality products, WCC-AISBL is negotiating with UNESCO to continue the Award of Excellence Programme and to cooperate in keeping it active by joining as partners. The APR Young Crafts Competition is still effective and launched independently by member countries.

Support and Sponsorship:

It is important to continue tightening past, existing, and future relations with international NGOs all over the world, and with international bodies like UNESCO. It is also important to build new relationships with cultural authorities in the public sector such as ministries of Culture and Tourism, as well as supportive corporate businesses and relevant cultural bodies in the private sector, namely art and design enterprises. We keep our relations with them vibrant and alive to support us in our march in promoting crafts activities and create better marketing.

Website-Networking:

Our APR website has been renovated recently. The network will be used as a crucible of diversified crafts information in the Asia Pacific Region and the other regions of the World Crafts Council (WCC). We have essentially built upon the previous APR website and will do our best to keep it interactive and up to date with information about crafts events and activities. It is, therefore, important to keep us informed of your activities through the WCC-APR Secretariat in order to circulate them to the members and post them on the website. Our visitors will be able to follow us on Twitter, Facebook and You Tube.

Events & Activities:

Most of the member countries of APR Region are becoming increasingly involved in promoting their traditional handicrafts by holding annual crafts events, exhibitions and other related functions. The 2013 year’s Calendar of Events is full of handicrafts festivals, fairs and exhibitions, etc., including various events. Our Website and APR Secretariat will keep you updated of forthcoming crafts events and activities in the coming years 2014-2016. The Executive Board and all the APR members, the Secretariat and myself will all work diligently and closely as a team to creatively and constructively seek new potentials and promising projects, hoping that we will witness in the near future more progress in the crafts industry and in the prosperity of its backbone, the craftspeople.

Before ending my message, I would like here to thank my predecessor, the Immediate Past President, Ms. Surapee Rojanavongse, and the Past Secretariat for their efforts of extended support and readiness to assist in providing information whenever needed. Thanks and appreciation are also extended to the Present and Past APR Executive Board members for their valuable contributions and continued support to APR Presidency. Last but not least, many thanks are due to the Immediate Past President of WCC, Mrs. Usha Krishna, for her successful efforts in formally registering WCC in Belgium as an International Organization in 2012, which is to be henceforth known as World Crafts Council AISBL (WCC-AISBL).  Thanks are also due to the Current President of WCC-AISBL, Mr.Wang Shan who continued the march of negotiations and finalized the Registration of World Crafts Council as an Internaional Non-Profit Organization (AISBL).

I hope that WCC-AISBL which will be celebrating its Golden Jubilee in October 18-26,2014, will reach its Centennial with additional and further landmark achievements of its noble objectives.

Thank you all,
